Facilitative Divorce Mediation

Facilitative mediation is a problem-solving strategy in which solutions are found using the needs and interests of the participants with the help of a neutral facilitator.

In cases of separation and/or divorce, The Ann Arbor Mediation Center and Divorce Facilitation Center work with both parties to find equitable solutions to interpersonal problems and financial questions.

Facilitative mediation assists separating and divorcing couples in reaching agreements related to

  • Child support
  • Ongoing children's issues
  • Alimony
  • Property division
  • Post-divorce issues

To accomplish this, the mediator will

  • Organize the parties to the tasks required
  • Help the couple identify and gather information so that it is available to both parties
  • Assist with communication
  • Act as a resource for ideas, information, and options
  • Assist both parties in understanding the issues
  • Assist each person in negotiating a fair and equitable settlement
  • Promote post-divorce cooperation

Experience has proven that settlements reached through mediated negotiations are more likely to be honored by both parties than those reached through an adversarial legal process. Additionally, mutually beneficial resolutions accomplished using facilitative mediation are documented so that each party may be furnished with a clear, concise record of the agreements reached.
